Does Kroger Take Apple Pay? Sometimes, Depending on Your Store

Does Kroger take Apple Pay at every store?

We cannot say yes for every store, and you should be careful with any website that does. Here is what we could confirm on October 29, 2026:

• Kroger’s own news releases describe a 2020 contactless pilot that took Apple Pay at QFC stores, and they describe Kroger Pay as the company’s own touchless payment.
• Tech news reports from April 2023 say select Kroger stores in Kentucky and Ohio began taking Apple Pay and other contactless payments, and that it was unclear how many stores were included.
• We did not find a Kroger press release, help page, or news report from 2024 to 2026 saying Apple Pay is now accepted at all Kroger stores.

Many pages online claim Kroger takes Apple Pay “everywhere.” Some of them are spam pages stuffed with phone numbers. Do not call numbers from those pages, and never share card details with anyone who calls or texts you claiming to be Kroger support.

The practical answer: Apple Pay may work at your Kroger, especially in areas where it was reported early, but plan for it not to. Bring a backup card or set up Kroger Pay before you shop.

How Kroger’s stance on Apple Pay changed

For years, Kroger was one of the largest U.S. grocers that did not accept Apple Pay. A short timeline helps explain why the answer is still mixed:

Kroger’s August 2020 news release about the QFC pilot is the clearest official statement we found. The April 2023 change was reported by MacRumors based on customer reports, and the report noted that Kroger did not say how many stores were included.

Kroger family stores and Apple Pay

Kroger runs many grocery chains under other names. Payment rules have not always matched across them, so the name on the sign matters. Based on MacRumors’ April 2023 report, these chains accepted Apple Pay at some or all locations at that time:

• Kroger (select stores, first reported in Kentucky and Ohio)
• Fred Meyer (Northwest stores, confirmed by a spokesperson)
• Ralphs (California)
• QFC (Washington and Oregon)
• King Soopers (Colorado and Wyoming)
• Harris Teeter (North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, and other states)

That report is from 2023, and we could not confirm current, store-by-store status for these chains. We also could not verify Apple Pay status for other Kroger-owned names, so we have not listed them. If you shop at a Kroger family store, use the checks in the next section.

How to tell if your Kroger takes Apple Pay

Because acceptance varies, a quick check saves an awkward moment at the register:

1. Look at the card reader. The contactless symbol (four curved lines, like a sideways Wi-Fi sign) means the reader can take tap payments. Apple’s where to use Apple Pay page notes the store must also be set up to accept contactless payments, so the symbol is a good sign, not a promise.
2. Search Apple Maps. Apple says you can search for Apple Pay in Maps to see nearby places that accept it. Store listings are not always up to date.
3. Ask a cashier or the service desk. Staff will know if tap to pay is turned on at that store.
4. Try self-checkout carefully. If the reader shows a contactless prompt, tap once. If nothing happens, switch to a card rather than tapping again and again.
5. Carry a backup. A physical debit card or Kroger Pay keeps you from getting stuck.

Fuel centers can be different from the grocery store. We found no Kroger source about Apple Pay at Kroger fuel pumps, so check the pump reader before you start fueling.

Kroger Pay as a backup at checkout

Kroger Pay is Kroger’s own phone payment. When Kroger launched it in 2019, Grocery Dive reported that it combines your payment card with your loyalty card and offers, and creates a QR code you scan at a regular checkout or self-checkout. Kroger’s 2020 release describes it the same way: one single-use QR code that carries your payment and loyalty details.

How it works in general:

1. Open the Kroger app and sign in to your account.
2. Add a debit or credit card to Kroger Pay in the app.
3. At checkout, open Kroger Pay to show the QR code.
4. Scan the code at the reader. Your loyalty card and digital coupons apply with the payment.

The steps in the app may look different from this, because Kroger updates its app often. Two things to keep in mind:

• Kroger Pay is not Apple Pay. It uses a QR code, not a tap, and your card is stored with Kroger rather than in Apple Wallet.
• Your loyalty savings still count. If you pay with Apple Pay or cash instead, scan your loyalty card or enter your phone number first so sale prices and coupons apply.

Ways to pay at Kroger compared

This table sums up what we could confirm as of October 29, 2026. Kroger’s help pages were not reachable when we checked, so treat “varies” as “ask your store.”

Using SNAP EBT at Kroger

Many families who shop at Kroger use SNAP, so it helps to know how EBT fits with phone payments:

• In stores: swipe or insert your EBT card and enter your PIN for SNAP-eligible food. Pay for everything else, like soap or paper towels, with another method. If your store takes Apple Pay, that second method can be Apple Pay.
• Online: In an October 25, 2023, news release, Kroger said it accepts EBT for digital pickup and delivery orders across all its banners. You add your EBT card in the wallet section of your Kroger.com account or app, choose a pickup or delivery time, select EBT at checkout, and enter your PIN.
• Fees are not covered: the USDA’s SNAP online purchasing page says delivery fees and other charges cannot be paid with SNAP. Put those, and any non-food items, on a second payment method.
• Not in Apple Wallet: as of October 2026, we are not aware of any state SNAP EBT card that can be added to Apple Pay. Bring your physical card.

Paying with your iPhone or Apple Watch

If your Kroger does take Apple Pay, the steps are the same as at any other store. Apple explains them on its Make purchases using Apple Pay page:

1. Scan your loyalty card first or enter your phone number so sale prices and coupons apply.
2. Wait for the reader to show your total and ask for payment.
3. On an iPhone with Face ID, double-click the side button. On an iPhone with a Home button, double-click the Home button.
4. Confirm it’s you with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.
5. Hold the top of your iPhone near the reader until you see “Done” and a checkmark.
6. On an Apple Watch, double-click the side button and hold the screen near the reader until you feel a tap.

If the reader asks for a PIN, you are likely paying with a debit card. Enter that card’s PIN. Apple says your actual card number is not stored on Apple’s servers or shared with the store, which is one reason tapping can be safer than swiping at a reader that might have a skimmer.

Keeping checkout costs low

Apple Pay and Kroger Pay do not add a fee by themselves. The card behind them decides what you pay. A few habits help when money is tight:

• Pick your default card on purpose. If your default card in Apple Wallet or Kroger Pay is a credit card you cannot pay off, each purchase adds to a balance that may carry interest. Many people set a debit card as the default.
• Check your balance first. A debit purchase that overdraws your account can cost an overdraft fee from your bank.
• Use benefits first. Spend SNAP on eligible food before using a card, and use any store gift cards before credit.
• Do not skip the loyalty card. Paying with Apple Pay does not apply Kroger loyalty prices on its own. Scan the card or enter your phone number.
• Be careful with pay-later plans. Buy now, pay later loans can add late fees and, if the payment bounces, bank fees too. Use them only if every payment fits your budget.

Apple Pay at other big stores

Most large U.S. retailers now take Apple Pay. Target accepts it in stores and online; see whether Target takes Apple Pay. Walmart, another long-time holdout, began adding tap to pay to U.S. stores in August 2026; see whether Walmart takes Apple Pay. Kroger is now one of the few big grocers where the answer still depends on the store.
