Key takeaways

  • Annual salary ≈ hourly rate × hours/week × 52; monthly pay is annual ÷ 12 (not weekly × 4).
  • These are gross figures — taxes and deductions reduce take-home pay.
  • Non-exempt hourly workers generally earn 1.5× their rate past 40 hours/week under federal law.

How the math works

All conversions run through one number: your effective hourly rate. Weekly pay is hourly × hours worked; annual is weekly × 52; monthly is annual ÷ 12 — which is why monthly pay is slightly more than four weekly checks (a year has ~4.33 weeks per month). If your hours vary, use your average over a normal month for the most honest picture.

From gross to take-home

Gross pay isn't what hits your account. Federal income tax (estimate yours with our income tax calculator), Social Security and Medicare (7.65% combined for employees), plus any state tax and benefits deductions come out first. As a rough rule, take-home lands between 70–85% of gross for most workers.

Overtime basics

Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, most hourly (non-exempt) employees must be paid at least 1.5× their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek — details at the U.S. Department of Labor. Some states go further (daily overtime in California, for example). If your paycheck doesn't match your hours, our free tools and consumer rights guide can help you check the math before raising it with your employer.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert hourly pay to salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by hours worked per week, then by 52. At $18.50/hour and 40 hours/week, that's $38,480 per year gross.

Why is monthly pay more than 4 weekly paychecks?

A year has about 4.33 weeks per month (52 ÷ 12), so a monthly figure includes that extra fraction.

Does this calculator show take-home pay?

No — it converts gross pay between periods. Taxes and deductions vary by person; our income tax calculator estimates the federal portion.
