Does Amazon Fresh Take EBT? Yes, Online: Fees, Prime Access, and How to Add Your Card

Does Amazon Fresh take EBT in my state?

Almost certainly yes, if Amazon Fresh delivers to your address. Amazon was one of the first retailers in the USDA online SNAP pilot back in 2019. Today USDA says online SNAP is available in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, and its state-by-state retailer list includes Amazon in every state we checked, from Alaska to Wyoming.

The bigger question is whether Amazon Fresh delivery reaches your ZIP code. Fresh delivery depends on Amazon having a grocery operation near you. USDA itself says the best way to know if delivery is available is to check the retailer's website. If Amazon Fresh does not serve your area, you may still be able to use SNAP for shelf-stable groceries shipped from Amazon.com, or for Whole Foods Market orders on Amazon where a store is nearby.

Your EBT card must be from a state SNAP program. Amazon does not accept WIC, and Pandemic EBT or Summer EBT cards may work differently depending on how your state issued them.

Amazon Fresh stores and what changed

On January 27, 2026, Amazon announced it was closing its Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh physical stores and converting some of them into Whole Foods Market locations. Amazon said customers can keep shopping Amazon Fresh online for delivery in areas where it is available.

For SNAP shoppers, this means two things. First, if you used to swipe your EBT card at an Amazon Fresh store, that store is closed or has become something else. If it reopened as a Whole Foods Market, you can use SNAP there at the checkout lane. Second, Amazon Fresh is now an online grocery service, so delivery fees and pickup options matter more than before. Amazon has said it is testing other formats, including an "Amazon Grocery" concept in Chicago, but it has not published how SNAP works at every new format. Ask at the store if you see one.

Adding your EBT card to Amazon

Amazon explains the setup on its SNAP page, and it takes only a few minutes:

1. Go to amazon.com/snap and sign in, or create a free Amazon account.
2. Enter your SNAP EBT card number and the name on the card.
3. Shop for items marked "SNAP EBT eligible."
4. At checkout, select your EBT card and enter your PIN.

If your order includes non-SNAP items or fees, Amazon lets you add a debit card, credit card, or gift card balance to cover the difference. Amazon never needs your PIN outside the secure checkout screen. USDA requires every online SNAP retailer to use encrypted PIN entry, which is why you enter your PIN on a separate payment screen.

What SNAP can buy on Amazon Fresh

The same USDA rules apply online as in a store. Amazon labels each eligible product, which makes it easy to check before you add it to your cart.

Delivery fees for SNAP shoppers

USDA rules say SNAP can only pay for eligible food. Delivery fees, service fees, and other charges must be paid another way. Amazon publishes reduced fees for registered EBT customers. When we checked Amazon's SNAP page, it listed these Amazon Fresh fees:

Amazon says some areas offer lower fees if you choose a longer delivery window of up to six hours. Non-members without EBT pay more, from $4.95 to $13.95 depending on basket size and time slot. Amazon also offers a low-cost grocery delivery subscription to registered EBT customers that covers unlimited delivery on orders over $25 from Amazon Fresh, Whole Foods Market, and some local grocers. Amazon did not list the subscription price on the page we checked, so look for it in your account before signing up.

Fees change often. Always check the total on the final checkout screen, where Amazon shows what goes on your EBT card and what goes on your other card.

Prime Access for EBT cardholders

Prime Access is Amazon's discounted Prime membership. Amazon's own page, updated in August 2026, lists the price at $6.99 a month, which Amazon says is more than half off the regular monthly Prime price. It includes the same benefits as regular Prime, such as free shipping and Prime Video.

You qualify if you receive one of the government programs Amazon lists, or if you verify your income. Amazon's list includes:

• SNAP EBT, WIC, TANF, and the National School Lunch Program
• Medicaid, SSI, and SSDI
• LIHEAP and Federal Public Housing Assistance
• Direct Express debit card holders
• Veterans and Survivors Pension Benefit, Tribal Assistance eligibility letters, and the Nutrition Assistance Program

You need to re-verify every 12 months, and you can cancel any time. Prime Access cannot be paid with SNAP, since it is not food.

Is it worth it? It depends on how you shop. You do not need Prime to use SNAP on Amazon Fresh. Prime Access mostly helps if you also buy household items from Amazon and want free shipping without minimums. If you only buy groceries, compare $6.99 a month with what you would pay in delivery fees, or choose free pickup if it is offered near you.

EBT cash on Amazon

Some EBT cards carry cash benefits, such as TANF, in addition to SNAP. Amazon says cash EBT can be used for nearly anything on Amazon.com, including household goods, clothing, and electronics, in 22 states plus D.C. Amazon has said cash EBT is not currently accepted on Amazon Fresh or Whole Foods Market orders. Check the payment options in your Amazon account to see whether your state's cash benefits are supported.

State SNAP restrictions on Amazon

Amazon notes that starting January 1, 2026, which products are SNAP eligible can vary by state. Under USDA food restriction waivers, some states block SNAP from buying soda, energy drinks, candy, or similar items. USDA's waiver page listed about two dozen approved states when we checked, with different start dates. A June 2026 federal court order also stopped at least one state's waiver, so the list keeps changing.

Amazon applies these rules automatically based on your delivery address. An item that is "SNAP EBT eligible" in one state may not be in another. If an item is not eligible, it moves to your other payment method at checkout.

Ways to keep online grocery costs down

• Build bigger, less frequent orders. Crossing the $100 mark removes the Amazon Fresh service fee for SNAP customers.
• Use pickup if it is near you. Amazon lists pickup as free, which saves the fee and the tip.
• Pick a longer delivery window. Amazon says longer windows can cost less in some areas.
• Look at unit prices. Amazon shows price per ounce or count on most groceries.
• Watch substitutions. If a substitute costs more or is not SNAP eligible, the charge can shift to your other card.
• Make sure your benefit is right. The maximum SNAP benefit for one person is $306 a month from October 2026 through September 2027. Check yours with our SNAP calculator.

1. Register your EBT card at amazon.com/snap.
2. Open Amazon Fresh and confirm your delivery address so eligibility and fees match your state.
3. Fill your cart with items marked "SNAP EBT eligible."
4. Choose delivery or pickup and a time window.
5. Review the payment split and add a debit or credit card for fees and non-SNAP items.
6. Enter your PIN on the secure payment screen to finish.
7. Check your order receipt for the final amount charged to SNAP after substitutions.
